Maori Tourism wants Kia Ora as New Zealand’s National Greeting

The executive of the group, Butch Bradley, believes that using the phrase and having people across the country pick it up will help to make New Zealand an even more unique place. He points to Hawaii, where ‘aloha’ is used frequently as a greeting, to show how it can become a big part of a country’s image. Many people believe the phrase is warm and welcoming, perfectly demonstrating the attitude of New Zealanders and encouraging people to head to the country on their holidays. It was even seen on the uniforms worn by the New Zealand Olympics team. If the group are successful in pushing ‘kia ora’ as the national greeting of New Zealand, the next time you arrive for your New Zealand tours you might find yourself getting a new, even warmer welcome.
