Gemma Bowes, travel writer for The Guardian, named five places that were not just great to visit in winter, but also could be considered better to visit in winter than at any other time of the year.
Included in this list was Budapest, Hungary, a favourite with those who enjoy river cruises in Europe. The highlights of a winter visit to Budapest included a trip to one of the many Turkish bath houses found in the city, where bathers can enjoy saunas, steam rooms, outdoor pools and more. Buda castle and local cuisine were also recommended as essentials for any trip to the city.
A second place that was recommended for winter included the Black Forest region in Germany, which becomes a stunning winter wonderland when the snow has fallen. As well as offering great walking opportunities, Germany's famous Christmas markets also make winter a great time to enjoy a river cruise along the Rhine.
