Visitors from the UK often dedicate a few hours of their trip purely to shopping in order to make the most of the range of outlets the city offers and the relative strength of the pound.
There are so many shops to visit in New York that days of a tour of the USA could be spent shopping in the city, so we have created a guide to the best shops in New York for luxury shopping so that you can make the most of your time and your money.
Barneys – Madison Avenue
This American chain of luxury department stores has one of its flagship shops in New York, making it a must for luxury New York shopping. Shoppers can expect to come across brands such as Barbour, Stella McCartney and Givenchy in Barney’s, so it really is the place to be if you are looking for the genuine article when it comes to established luxury brands.
Whilst the products are likely to be fairly pricey, visitors can expect all the other aspects of a satisfying shop; great service, a welcoming atmosphere and luxury brands providing the latest fashionable items. They also have sales twice a year, which are always hugely popular.
Century 21 - Broadway
Shoppers are continually impressed by the savings they make on top quality fashion at Century 21. They claim to always offer up to 65 per cent off the original retail price, which makes them one of the best shops in New York for discount shopping, but this also means that it can be incredibly busy.
Generally shoppers need to hunt through the stock to find that perfect dress with the purse-friendly price tag, but the deals are so good that this does not matter to many reviewers on TripAdvisor. Click here to take a look at some of these reviews.
FAO Schwarz – Fifth Avenue
This is the New York toy shop that appears in all of the big movies, including ‘Big’ and ‘Home Alone 2’. Established in 1862, FAO Schwarz is the oldest toy shop in the USA and is known for offering exclusive, luxury toys that make it a child’s dream playground; its large-scale displays make it hardly surprising that FAO Schwarz has appeared in so many famous children’s films.
The store has some unique features where visitors can personalise their own toys, such as at The Muppet Whatnot Workshop, and also offers visitors the chance to indulge their sweet tooth with the FAO Schweetz candy department. A visit to this New York toy shop is not just for kids; it really is one of the best shops in New York for all ages.
Henri Bendel – Fifth Avenue
Henri Bendel is a fantastic specialty store for ladies, offering luxury handbags, shoes, purses, scarves and all kinds of other accessories that will make any woman feel confident, pampered and exclusive.
Sadly this is not one for the gents, unless they are hoping to treat the woman in their life to a lovely gift, in which case the iconic brown and white stripy Henri Bendel shopping bag alone is sure to impress.
Macy’s – Herald Square
Saks Fifth Avenue may be one of the best department stores in New York for luxury goods, but Macy’s are famous for offering an 11 per cent discount pass to foreign visitors, which makes it great value for well-known, if not exclusive, brands. Bring along your passport to Macy’s to prove you are not an American citizen and get some serious discounts on your New York shopping. If service and luxury brands are what you are looking for, Saks or Henri Bendel may be a better choice.
Aside from the shopping, a fantastic time to visit New York is around Thanksgiving, when Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade makes its way through the city, attracting millions of visitors. Macy’s flagship store can be found on the northwest corner of Broadway.
