While the Scenic News page can reveal lots about the unforgettable experiences which await during a luxury Scenic river cruise, we thought we could provide a little more detail about what you can expect day-to-day during your time on board one of our luxury Space-Ships — where every day is made truly extraordinary.
So, in order to rectify this, we’ve enlisted the help of Scenic Reservation Consultant, Sophie Pearson, to fill us in on what guests can expect when they step on board a Scenic river ship. Sophie enjoyed her very first Scenic river cruise back in August 2016, travelling from Nuremberg to Budapest on the mighty Danube as part of our Gems of the Danube itinerary.
Here, Sophie fills us in on some of the highlights of life on board a Scenic Space-Ship, beginning with her embarkation in Nuremberg up to her final farewell in Budapest — hopefully providing you with greater insight into a week on board a Scenic river cruise.
Day 1 — Embarkation in Nuremberg
Having flown from the UK to Munich, a Scenic representative met us at the airport to transfer us to our ship, which was waiting for us in the beautiful medieval city of Nuremberg. The transfer was smooth and simple, with a handful of our fellow passengers joining us in a comfortable private coach for the journey to the ship.
Upon arrival, I was struck by the size and elegance of the ship, as well as our warm welcome on board. We received a hot towel and a glass of champagne during check in, and our butler promptly took care of our luggage, before showing us to our suite.
The room itself was spacious and effortlessly comfortable, and complete with the delightful Scenic Sun Lounge balcony system, which we began to feel the benefit of almost immediately. There was also a fully-stocked mini bar complete with wine, chocolates and light snacks; in short, the perfect place to unwind after a flight.
Once we were suitably settled in, we made our way to the Crystal Dining room for the welcome dinner, which featured three courses and unlimited drinks. If every meal was to be like this over the course of our river cruise, we had no worries about going hungry.
Day 2 — Exploring Nuremberg
After the first night’s sleep, we were given the opportunity to explore the fascinating medieval streets and renowned WWII sites of Nuremberg — but not before treating ourselves to the mouth-watering buffet-style breakfast offered in Crystal Dining.
During our visit to Nuremberg’s World Heritage-listed city centre, we were joined by an expert guide, who offered up lots of fascinating insight into the history of the city. This, coupled with the handy Tailormade personal GPS device, made for a much more immersive experience than if we’d simply been sightseeing on our own.
Thanks to our ship’s close proximity to the city centre, we were able to do much more individual exploration after lunch, which was made much more engaging with the help of the Tailormade device. Upon arriving back at our ship, we were treated to a decadent four-course meal, with each dish paired with a different German wine — the perfect way to end a wonderful day.
Day 3 — The Danube, Weltenburg Abbey and Portobellos
Day three on board our Scenic Space-Ship began in the best way possible. We had our butler bring us a pot of tea to enjoy on our balcony, as the beautiful scenery of the Danube rolled by — what a way to start the day.
Following another hearty breakfast, during which time our ship made dock in Regensberg, we opted to join a tour of Weltenburg Abbey as part of Scenic Freechoice, which meant a short ferry journey. Travelling to the abbey was made extremely simple by our Cruise Director, who seemed to have the ability to be in a dozen places at once, and always wearing a smile.
During our time exploring the historic abbey site, we were given the opportunity to sample a collection of beers in one of the world’s oldest breweries — a truly special experience for beer lovers. Then it was time to return to our ship, which again, was made effortless by our cool and collected Cruise Director.
That evening, we enjoyed a sumptuous five-course Italian meal at speciality dining restaurant, Portobellos. Here, the food was made fresh before our eyes, and each course was expertly paired with regional wines to add an extra level of authenticity and excitement to proceedings — what a treat after a day of sightseeing.
Day 4 — Český Krumlov and a little downtime
Day four of our journey down the Danube granted us the opportunity to take a tour of the beautiful and historic Czech city of Český Krumlov, where an expert guide took us on a tour of the city’s World Heritage-listed highlights and beautiful pockets of architectural splendour.
Upon returning to our ship, we decided to visit the wellness centre for a relaxing massage from a skilled masseuse, before ordering our evening meal to our suite thanks to the flexible room service offering. We then enjoyed a relaxing evening watching movies on our interactive Mac Mini system, which proved a wonderful way to recharge and get ready for a new day of exploration and discovery.
Day 5 —Melk, the Benedictine Abbey and a very special party
On day five of our river cruise, we arrived at the exquisite Austrian city of Melk, whose palatial Benedictine Abbey proved the highlight of the day. Founded in 1089, Melk Abbey enjoys a commanding position on a rocky outcrop above Melk and the Danube, offering far-reaching views across the exquisite Wachau Valley. Here, we enjoyed a fascinating guided tour, before descending the hill to explore Melk — giving us time to take the wonderful Scenic E-bikes out for a spin for the first time.
That evening, we enjoyed a wonderful cocktail party as part of Scenic Sundowners, drinking in the spectacular scenery of the Wachau Valley whilst savouring expertly-crafted cocktails. Another unforgettable way to spend the evening.
Day 6 — Vienna and Palais Liechtenstein
On day six, our ship made dock in the heart of Austria’s enchanting capital city, Vienna. Today’s Freechoice decision was a real no-brainer; it had to be a walking tour of the city, in which we were able to visit some of its most famous sights, including Schönbrunn Palace, the Vienna State Opera and the Spanish Riding School. An expert guide joined us for the tour, helping elevate our experience of this captivating city.
The evening brought a truly special experience, and one of the absolute highlights of our trip — a visit to the prestigious Palais Liechtenstein as part of Scenic Enrich. With a glass of Austrian Sekt in hand, we enjoyed an unforgettable evening of classical music within the walls of this majestic former palace, and I can honestly say I’ve never encountered something so special.
Day 7 — Exploring Budapest
On the final full day of our river cruise, we awoke in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Budapest. Drawing back the blinds to find the Hungarian State Parliament Building glimmering on the opposite bank was truly one of the most exciting experiences of my life, and we couldn’t wait to get out and explore this renowned and historic city.
Wishing to take in as many of the landmark sights of Budapest as we could, we opted to take part in another guided walking tour, which certainly delivered plenty of local insight and history. Our tour ended with a magical private piano recital, which seemed to encapsulate all the beauty and nostalgia of this unforgettable place.
That evening, we joined new-found friends for dinner and drinks in Crystal Dining, raising a toast to a special and memorable trip on the Danube’s timeless waters.
Day 8 — Farewell
After one final delicious breakfast, our transfer coach arrived to take us to the airport, marking the end of an extraordinary holiday on the river Danube.
