Every month, we chat to a member of the Scenic family, getting the inside view at Scenic HQ and discovering what makes our team tick.
At Scenic, we’re hugely proud of every member of our team, and their dedication to ensuring our river cruises, land tours and (next year) ocean cruises offer the greatest experiences possible. From the friendly sales team helping you find your perfect itinerary to the on board crew ensuring every moment of your stay with us is memorable and enjoyable, every member of the team has one joint goal – providing the very best holiday experiences for all our guests.
This month, we’re chatting to Dominic Keely, one of our Marketing Executives – the team behind all the great work we produce here at Scenic. We discuss his favourite parts of working for Scenic, and probe him for a few insider travel tips. Read on for Dominic’s Scenic Spotlight.
Hi Dominic, could you tell us a little about your role at Scenic? How long have you worked here, and what do your day-to-day duties involve?
I started working in the marketing department at Scenic just over a year ago. And my day-to-day duties mainly involve putting together our extensive collection of brochures and direct mail. I also get involved with many other parts of the marketing including weekly emails, the website, events and PR.
What do you enjoy most about working for Scenic?
I love how many different things we get to be involved in, from loyalty events at the Bridgewater Hall to producing the annual Europe River Cruising brochure, two days are never the same. I also love the product we work with, the experiences and places that we take guests to gives me a great sense of pride.
How has the company changed since you began working here?
Even in just a year, I feel that the company has changed a lot, the team has grown as we continue to see our presence increase in the river cruise market. The biggest change has to be our move into the ocean cruise market with Scenic Eclipse, the World’s First Discovery Yacht, which I’ve had a lot of fun working on.
Have you ever been on a Scenic river cruise, and if so, how was it?
Yes, I was lucky enough to sail on Scenic Jewel last October on the Gems of the Danube itinerary. I flew out to Budapest, one of the most picturesque cities I’ve ever been to, and was lucky enough to visit the famous Thermal Baths on my Freechoice excursion whilst in the city. I then enjoyed all the inclusive elements of a Scenic cruise whilst sailing from Budapest to Vienna, from the exquisite food to the personal butler service, I definitely made the most of it!
Once in Vienna, I got to witness the highlight of any Scenic cruise, the Scenic Enrich experience. This was a private Viennese concert featuring classics such as The Blue Danube Waltz, hosted in the stunning Palais Lichtenstein. I have to say it was an amazing experience and one I can’t wait to repeat when I go to Paris on the Gems of the Seine itinerary in August.
Which is your favourite Scenic Space-Ship? And what features do you think guests can most look forward to during their time on board?
If I had to pick one, I’d have to go with Scenic Azure, which sails on the Douro River in Portugal. The Scenic Azure is a little bit smaller and more intimate than the rest of the Space-Ship fleet and has been specially commissioned to sail the waters of the Douro yet still features all the luxury appointments that you’d expect. Scenic Azure is also the only Space-Ship to feature the Table d'Or restaurant.
What one piece of advice would you give to those taking a river cruise for the first time?
To travel independently at some point and go off the beaten track using the Scenic Tailormade device. Whether you roam on foot or one of our e-bikes, the Scenic Tailormade device offers over 240 tour options in over 140 locations across Europe so you can see something that interests you and you’ll never get lost thanks to the built-in GPS.
Of all the excursions offered as part of Scenic Enrich and Freechoice, which is your favourite?
Apart from Palais Lichtenstein, I would have to say the Scenic Enrich in Moscow at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics, where you get to meet a real cosmonaut and look at all the models and exhibits.
Where would you like to travel in the future, and why?
That’s a difficult one, there’s so many! I would have to say either Russia or Northern France. Like many people, I’m intrigued by Russia and its history and how it was shut off from the world for so many years. And with cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, our cruises offer so much to see and do whilst there. As well as Russia, I can’t wait to travel through Northern France in a few weeks’ time, as I’m really interested in the part this region played in the World Wars.
