A Conversation with a Scenic Cruise Director

To demonstrate the hard work that goes into each and every one of our river cruise itineraries, we sat down for a quick chat with Hunor Nagy, one of the many devoted Cruise Directors here at Scenic, and currently working on board Scenic Jasper. Hunor and his team are tasked with the smooth running of each cruise, and go above and beyond to ensure each guest is 100% happy. We ask Hunor about his day-to-day responsibilities, as well as his favourite destinations to travel to.

Hello, Hunor. Thank you for sitting with me. How long have you worked for Scenic?

This is my second year. Before this, I worked for another cruise line for ten years.

Do you work exclusively on Scenic Jasper?

No; whereas the crew stays on board, each Cruise Director works across all the ships. I have worked on Scenic Jewel, Crystal, Jade, Ruby, and now Jasper. The crew really makes the ship, so it is such a pleasure to be welcomed on board and forge good friendships with each team.

As Cruise Director, what are your day-to-day responsibilities?

My role encompasses all aspects of the cruise. I am involved in everything from organising excursions, transfers, special on-shore dinners, and taking care of special requests from guests. I also deliver daily port talks and Freechoice excursion presentations, and make time to answer any questions from guests during the day. It is very much a team effort, and the whole crew works closely together to ensure that everything is going as planned and that every guest is happy.

What would you say is your favourite part of your job?

I enjoy every part! There are really two parts of my job; the first is the logistical side, which is very behind the scenes. It is quietly ensuring the smooth running of the ship and the itinerary, and dealing with any issues that may arise as quickly as possible. The other part is face-to-face, where I interact with our guests and get involved with what is happening on board and on shore. This I really enjoy - I speak to a wide range of people from different walks of life, who have such interesting lives and tell such brilliant stories. I enjoy creating strong relationships, even friendships, with our guests; it is a great satisfaction to keep in touch with guests after they have gone home, and then see those same guests return for another trip.

What is your favourite destination to travel to?

Again, I really enjoy all of the destinations we visit. Each destination has something different to offer and its own highlights. There are so many things to learn in each place. The Lower Danube for example is steeped in history, and every time I visit a place I learn something new about the different eras, wars, etc. If I had to pick a favourite, I would say Budapest, as it really is the pearl of the Danube.
