'Domplatz, Mainland' depicts an Italian city square and was painted by the artist in 1968. The sale of this piece generated a record-breaking $37m at Sotheby's auction of contemporary art in New York. Sotheby's described the sale as a "major accomplishment", cementing Gerhard Richter's place as the greatest living artist in the world.
The sale of 'Domplatz, Mainland' broke the previous record of $33.5 million that was set by another Gerhard Richter painting back in October 2012. The 1994 abstract oil painting was previously owned by Eric Clapton, a keen fan of Richter's work.
Richter's work is regularly exhibited in his home town of Cologne, but his work can also be viewed all year round in Cologne Cathedral, where a stained glass window creation of his adds colour to the gothic structure.
