Budapest's Gellert Hill to be renovated

Gellert Hill has long been an essential place to visit on romantic river cruises, with the site providing the elevation needed to enjoy amazing vistas of Budapest and its most famous landmarks. Millions of people tackle the walk up Gellert Hill every year to take their photos of Budapest and to simply enjoy the views, which provide the perfect finishing touch to a romantic walk. Gellert Hill was even named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 as part of 'the Banks of the Danube', which also encompasses the Citadella fortress that sits at the top of the hill.

Whilst millions of people visit and appreciate Gellert Hill each year, the Hungarian Government's Ministry of Public Administration and Justice ruled in October that the current tenants of the Citadella fortress are not abiding by World Heritage requirements. The prestige of this status and the importance of the hill to visitors have meant that the government has transferred the operating rights of the Citadella and Gellert Hill to the state asset manager MNV. This was then passed onto the 11th District on 7th November.

Now that the operating rights have been transferred, plans for a thorough renovation of Gellert Hill and the Citadella have been announced. Although little has been revealed in the way of what specific changes or upgrades have been planned, Mayor Tamás Hoffmann has invited developers to submit ideas and suggestions to the district in spring 2014, when they are hoping to set out a plan to preserve Gellert Hill, thereby ensuring it will continue to be of the most visited places in Europe.
