The study by the US Department of Commerce’s Office of National Travel and Tourism has shown that Philadelphia is one of the top destinations for luxury America tours as it was the 13th most visited city in the country last year.
The annual study revealed that 673,000 visitors from across the world visited Philadelphia in 2013, which is a 13 per cent increase compared to 2012.
Philly proves popular with Brits
Going into more detail, the research revealed that the most visitors came from the UK with 88,000 Brits in total travelling to Philadelphia on USA tours and other holidays in 2013.
The region was most popular with holidaymakers from Western Europe as 84,000 Germans and 59,000 people from France visited Philly. Philadelphia is also becoming hugely popular with holidaymakers from China (40,000) and India (31,000) and many experts expect this number to continue to rise.
Jack Ferguson, who is the president and CEO of the PHLCVB, said, “This increase in overseas visitation is the direct result of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau’s international consumer marketing and public relations campaign.
“Since the launch of international marketing efforts in 2002, we’ve seen Philadelphia move from 21st to 13th place in ranking of overseas visitation. Our plans are to continue this momentum with new and innovative sales and marketing initiatives, including a focus on emerging target markets.”
New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Orlando and San Francisco made up the top five most visited cities in the USA in 2013, but with the news that Philadelphia once again moved up the rankings it has stolen the majority of the headlines.
With attractions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, it is thought that Philadelphia will continue to be a huge hit with international visitors.
