The icons of southern France are exquisitely showcased on the banks of the Rhône, a timeless passageway stretching from the Swiss Alps to the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast. The river weaves through the vineyards of Burgundy and Beaujolais, cutting a course through towns and cities like Lyon, Tournon and Viviers, before entering the lavender-flecked landscapes of Provence — one of France’s most beloved regions. From Lyon to Arles, the Rhône introduces captivating destinations like Avignon and Tarascon, whose heritage highlights include the magnificent Palais des Papes and the imposing Château de Tarascon. Your final stop on this wonderful journey is the commune of Chalon-sur-Saône, whose location amid the ‘Golden Stone’ region of Burgundy makes it one of the best places to sample the famed local wine.
