Darcey Bussell: My life in travel

Dame Darcey Bussell will join Scenic for another illustrious dance-themed cruise, this time along the Danube. She tells us what she’s looking forward to most about the upcoming cruise and opens up about her life in travel…
What do you need for a perfect holiday?
Sun, the outdoors, the sea or a river and a view.
Where do you regularly escape?
South-west France to the Bordeaux region. The combination of the coast, the wine districts, Bordeaux itself and the Pyrenees is almost unbeatable.
Your most memorable work trip?
A tour of China and Japan with The Royal Ballet Company. In China I performed for the Premier and the Company also walked a very small part of the Great Wall.
The most unusual place you've been asked to perform?
Once my pointe shoes melted on a very hot stage in the evening heat of summer, performing in an open-air auditorium in Tel Aviv!
Is there anything you can't travel without? What's your travel essential?
My foam roller! To iron out my back as I’m not good at sitting still for too long.
What’s your favourite thing about cruising/a cruise ship?
Often the gym has one of the best views. But more sensibly, visiting many places without having to pack and unpack.
Would you potentially collaborate on any more cruise itineraries, where else would you like to sail?
It is incredibly enjoyable, so yes. The Nile please!
You're hosting a talk on the cruise, can you give us a sneak peak of what you'll be sharing/any particular anecdotes?
I do bring footage and give the audience a bit of a masterclass, to give an insight to the performing world and the personalities I have worked with. We also have a look at the photography behind dance.
