Stargazing with Scenic Discovery Yachts
Out at sea and far away from city lights, the night sky comes to life. On board Scenic Eclipse, the stars are more than scenery; they’re a timeless reminder that discovery doesn’t end when the sun goes down.

The significance of the stars

For as long as humankind has travelled, we have looked to the stars for guidance. Long before compasses and modern technology, the night sky was our first map, and reflected a constellation of hope, connection, and survival.

Today, Scenic Eclipse sets the benchmark in ocean discovery. With its purpose-built, world-leading technology, we no longer need the stars to navigate, as we still trace the same routes that once guided ancient voyagers to new horizons.

As you sit beneath a sky untouched by time, the ship sailing silently through open waters, you may find yourself reflecting on the connection between past and present. The same stars that guided Polynesian explorers across the South Pacific and Minoan traders through the Mediterranean still shine above you, a celestial reminder that the longing to discover and ignite your sense of wonder is as eternal as the night itself.

The Northern Hemisphere

In the north, seafarers once followed Polaris, our North Star and the Big Dipper across Europe’s vast oceans, the same constellations that, on clear nights, are visible from the Observation Lounge and Deck on board Scenic Eclipse as she sails legendary routes through the Atlantic and beyond.

On voyages like our Jewels of Spain & Morocco, and the Canary Islands, Morocco & Southern Spain, springtime in the Atlantic offers some of the clearest skies of the year. Far from large cities, it’s the perfect opportunity to observe the night sky in all its glory, following in the footsteps of the ancient Phoenicians who established their settlements along the Spanish and Moroccan coastline using the same stars.

For travellers seeking true serenity, our Wellness Voyage - Barbados to Spain offers slow days of rejuvenation and endless starlit nights on a transatlantic crossing far from shore. In 2026, mark your calendars for 12 August, when a full solar eclipse will sweep across the Arctic and guests on board our Baltic Splendour: Stockholm to Copenhagen voyage will enjoy a remarkable partial eclipse from Stockholm.

The Southern Hemisphere

Across the equator, the sky transforms, familiar constellations of the north disappear and are replaced by new ones entirely. Most notably, the Southern Cross and the long winding trail of silver that is the Milky Way.

Masters of navigation, the Polynesians relied on these wayfinders across the vast Pacific, connecting islands thousands of miles apart. Follow their legacy on our South Pacific Discovery: Norfolk, New Caledonia & Fiji or Treasures of French Polynesia & the Marquesas Islands voyages and relish the opportunity to witness the night sky sparkle in remarkable clarity, blurring the lines between where the sky ends and the water begins.

Further north, the Panama Canal & the Alluring Islands of the Caribbean itinerary offers the perfect opportunity for stargazing, with tranquil tropical nights and an array of hidden coves away from the elements. On our Wellness Retreat - Panama City to Valparaiso, after a day of indulgence and healing, you can reflect far from civilisation with only the hum of the ocean below and the Milky Way glowing above you.

How to enjoy stargazing on board

Find your preferred stargazing spot on board Scenic Eclipse. Whether you’re wrapped in a blanket on your private verandah with a nightcap from your personal butler, or on the Observation Deck with fellow guests and crew. Here are some of our top tips to best enjoy your experience:

Equipment
In your suite, you’ll have your very own pair of binoculars. Make sure you grab these to help you get a closer and clearer perspective. Or perhaps try the Swarovski telescopes in the Observation Lounge for the ultimate view.

Photography
Try to find a steady surface where your camera can rest. Set your aperture to wide and your ISO between 800-3200, depending on how dark it is. Your exposure should be around 15-20 seconds, long enough to absorb as much light as possible. Condensation can upset your photos, so make sure you have your lens cloth to keep your camera clean.

Ask our experts
With an open bridge policy and up to 20 Discovery Team members on Expedition and Discovery Voyages, take advantage of their wealth of knowledge. You never know the stories and facts they will share, making the experience far more immersive and unique.

Warm clothes
Whether you’re sailing the polar regions or the tropics, ensure you have something warm to wrap yourself in for extra comfort.
