River Cruising
Budapest is a popular destination for Scenic’s all-inclusive river cruises along the Danube. Whether you’re embarking on a summertime river cruise or a festive journey to experience the enchanting Christmas markets, Budapest has something special for everyone.
Discover the enchanting Castle District of Budapest, an essential stop on your journey through Hungary’s capital. This area is home to a wealth of historical landmarks and breathtaking architecture, including the impressive Buda Castle, the intriguing labyrinth beneath it, the iconic Matthias Church, and the picturesque Fisherman’s Bastion. From the hilltop, there are spectacular views of the Chain Bridge, offering an ideal photo opportunity.
Many of the historic buildings in the Castle District grace the banks of the Danube. Once we dock, you can explore these architectural marvels on foot or simply relax on deck and take in the stunning views.
Perched majestically atop Castle Hill on the Buda side of the Danube, Buda Castle is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Originally constructed in 1265, the palace that dominates the site today was built in the mid-1700s, only to suffer extensive damage during the Siege of Budapest in World War II. It was rebuilt in a neo-Baroque style and now houses the National Széchényi Library, the National Gallery, and the Budapest History Museum.
You may be able join an exclusive guided hike to Castle Hill on your Danube River cruise. Climb this World Heritage-listed site and be captivated by the breathtaking views of the Danube River. Explore the exquisite Neo-Renaissance gardens and the fascinating exhibitions at Várkert Bazár.
Another remarkable attraction in this area is the labyrinth beneath Castle Hill. This historic network of tunnels, dating back to the Middle Ages, has served various purposes over the centuries – from a shelter to a Turkish harem and, later, an emergency hospital during World War II, famously known as the Hospital in the Rock.
Several of our European river cruises offer you the opportunity to explore this underground maze on an included Scenic Freechoice excursion. The hospital features wax figures that vividly depict wartime scenes, offering a glimpse into its historical significance. As you wander through the passageways, you’ll encounter Dracula’s chamber, the alleged prison of Vlad the Impaler. You’ll also navigate the Maze of Darkness, an eerie experience where you hold onto a hose and traverse in complete darkness for a few minutes. This authentic and thrilling experience is a must-see.
Learn about Budapest’s rich history, from its early days with the Celts in the 4th century BC to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution against communist rule. The city's amazing museums showcase this fascinating past. Here are three of our favourites:
Nestled within Buda Castle, the Hungarian National Gallery, or Magyar Nemzeti Galéria, has been a beacon of art and culture since opening in 1957. This gallery boasts an impressive collection of Hungarian art, spanning diverse genres from Medieval and Gothic to Baroque. As the largest public collection of fine arts in Hungary, it highlights the country’s rich artistic history.
Visitors can marvel at an extensive array of 19th and 20th-century paintings, sculptures, and coin collections.
A visit to the gallery also grants access to the Dome’s terrace, the highest point of the Castle. From there, soak up spectacular panoramic views of Budapest. It’s one of the best spots to take in the city’s beautiful scenery.
Also located inside Buda Castle, the Budapest History Museum is a must-visit for those eager to delve into the Hungarian capital’s rich past. This captivating museum offers a comprehensive journey through the city’s history, showcasing life in Budapest across various eras, including its time as three distinct towns: Buda, Pest, and Óbuda.
As you explore the museum’s four floors, you’ll encounter an array of intriguing artefacts, from ancient books and garments to exquisite paintings and period furniture. The basement reveals the castle’s medieval roots, featuring the chapel and Gothic hall, remnants from the days when the site served as a fortress before the construction of the Royal Palace. This immersive experience is perfect for history enthusiasts and curious travellers alike.
Explore Budapest's rich Jewish heritage by visiting the Hungarian Jewish Museum in the lively Jewish Quarter. The museum features a remarkable collection of Judaica artefacts, historical items like a Roman-era gravestone, and the largest Jewish community archives in Europe.
Scenic’s river cruises along the Danube often include guided tours that delve into Hungary’s Jewish history. These excursions include visits to the Jewish Museum, the Dohány Street Synagogue, the cemetery and the memorial park, providing a thorough and insightful experience.
During your freetime in Budapest, Discover the grandeur of the Parliament Building, situated on the Pest side of the Danube at Kossuth Lajos Square. Take a guided tour where you will learn the fascinating history of the square, including the events of Bloody Thursday and the importance of the National Unity Monument.
As you enter, admire the beautiful decorations on the grand staircase. Visit the Assembly Hall and the Hall of the Dome to see the Crown Jewels, including the Holy Crown of Hungary. Continue your tour through the Old Upper House, the Council of Deputies, and the History of the House exhibition, each showcasing impressive architecture.
This attraction is an exceptional experience for enthusiasts of political history and architectural beauty. Before embarking on your journey to Budapest, here are a few essential considerations to enhance your experience:
